2-year-old girl dies in police custody after being thrown from car in Vancouver

A 2-month-old baby girl has died in custody after she was thrown from a moving car in downtown Vancouver, police said.

Officers responding to a call of a car crash at a downtown intersection Monday found a 2-week-old and a toddler inside.

The toddler, wearing a face mask, was rushed to hospital, but the infant died.

Vancouver police said it was not immediately clear if the baby had been in the car or whether the infant had been inside.

A witness told police the baby and the toddler were thrown from the car while it was stopped at a traffic light at about 7:20 a.m.

(9:20 p.m., ET).

The child was not in the vehicle.

Police said the driver of the car was taken into custody and the infant was taken to hospital.

The mother of the toddler, who was in the backseat, was not injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
